Target Shooting is one of the safest, most injury free sports there is. A life sport,
it is enjoyed by competitors from 8 to 80 plus and all levels of competitors rub elbows
and share ideas. For example, I was in a match in 1996 and discovered that one of my
fellow competitors was an Olympic Gold Medalist... in 1948! Target shooting is so popular
around the world that entry into the Olympic shooting events is exeedingly difficult.
Countries must earn Olympic Quota Slots - that is, right to enter - on the World Cup
circuit.
Target shooting has been such a large part of the Olympics that the first medal awarded
in every Olympiad is for Target Shooting. Originally awarded to the winner of the Men's
Free Pistol competition, the first medal of each Olympiad is now awarded to the winner of
the Women's Air Rifle competition.
